Notebooks: Anand lays the smack down!
I saw this blog post over at anandtech here that had an interesting take on the sales of cheaper notebook machines:
Looks like the Notebook manufacturers want to keep everyone in ignorance of the quality of their mid-range to lower end notebooks.
The one project I started when I returned was that notebook review I briefly mentioned earlier. The first roundup will be a roundup of the glamorous world of $600 notebooks. Why focus on the cheapest notebooks out there? Well, out of the ~7.5M people we've got reading the site every month, I'm willing to bet that a lot of you folks recommend hardware to other people. And not everyone out there, yourselves included, are interested in spending $1500+ on a notebook. So I figured I'd start small, and work my way up the price chain.
What is interesting is that most notebook manufacturers don't want these things reviewed. Out of the 5 notebooks in the roundup, we had to buy 4, the manufacturers simply refused to send review samples of those - although they had no problems sending samples of more expensive models. The reason being that most companies don't make money off of these $600 systems, and thus selling more of them isn't always their goal. They have to offer them to remain competitive, and to lure buyers in for more expensive upgrades, but in a perfect world from a manufacturer's standpoint, the $600 notebook wouldn't exist.
I've probably given away too much about the roundup already, as it is still about 2 - 3 weeks away, but work is progressing nicely.
Looks like the Notebook manufacturers want to keep everyone in ignorance of the quality of their mid-range to lower end notebooks.

Ebay - Subject: Auction and payment tips
A good thing to do if you own computer hardware if you are an enthusiast is to sell your old stuff before it devalues too much on ebay and purchase new equipment. The only problem with this is that ebays starting to take significant chunks of change for listing fee's and final value fees, if you have an account with them, let them email you promotions and take advantage of "free listing" days to make the most out of selling your hardware. Sure you'll get some ebay spam but its worth it in the end if you dont have to pay them a dime.
Also, if you are buying hardware ALWAYS and I mean ALWAYS buy parts or components from ebay sellers that have 100% feedback, never go with anyone who has any negative feedback. I got ripped of trying to purchase a DVD-Writer for Roughly ~$160 back when they first game out on someone who had 99% feedback rating. Also look for paypal buyer protection, NEVER buy from ebayers that dont have it or if the ebayer has 100% feedback and very few comments always get legit contact information from them, if they are honest they should be willing to reveal their own identity and place of work or business. Ebay since purchasing paypal is now able to refund your money in disputed auctions provided you weren't the one dicking around with the sellers legit auction (I've sold stuff and there are many bad bidders as well). So there you go, some common sense tips to stay safe!

NCIX.COM - Subject: Online web vendors for PC components
So far I've found www.ncix.com (canadian side) to be pretty good, although their they try to take you on "insurance" and other such BS to cover their good prices. They also have price matching to other online vendors although they get to pick and choose.
I've bought quite a few things from them, I bought 5 Seagate hard drives, an antenna for my wireless dlink router (which worked! 2.5x the range), and some other stuff. They've been very good thus far although they tax their shipping cost (the bastards), you're not supposed to tax shipping. Shipping via Canada Post is the way to go as most other shipping options they inflate the prices, they operate out of British columbia and have online forums and user reviews and whatnot. It's a pretty impressive site overall even if their prices aren't always the lowest and their website layout is not always the best.

Why did I start this blog?
Well I got sick and tired scouring the web for good places to buy computer / technology stuff online, and then having to worry about whether or not a vendor would ship to canada from the US and also dealing with loads of bookmarks or trying to remember addresses, so I thought I'd gather the best of my knowledge unto one place and call to others as well about the best places online to find technology to buy.
Also don't you wonder if the reviews on some sites for something you want to buy has been doctored or filtered by the business website itself? So consider this a call to the "community" about stuff they've bought or owned. For instance I've had the most problems with wireless Dlink and linksys routers for instance, the dlink constantly disconnects / reboots itself causing DSL with PPPoE to disconnect momentarily as it relogs the router back into the Internet service provider. As for the linksys, every so often it either freezes or disconnects ONLY the wireless connections. Not to mention Dlinks terrible warranty service.
So here's to hoping I can find some PC enthusiast canadians that are fed up with looking around trying to get good deals within their own home country online.
